Post subject:  Open Garden Water Temp sensor being affected by EC sensor

I'm new to the open garden and just getting set up and ran into some weirdness.

When I run the sample code for the water(soil) temp it works fine except that the first reading is 85 degrees celsius and then settles down to a correct reading.

However when I load the large sample code that works will all the sensors I'm finding that if I take an EC reading then the temperature stays at 85 degrees celsius.

Here are code snippets and the serial port output from them. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

//Read DS18B20
float waterTemperature = OpenGarden.readSoilTemperature();
Serial.print(F("Water Temperature: "));
Serial.print(waterTemperature);
Serial.println("*C");

//Read the pH sensor
int mvpH = OpenGarden.readpH(); //Value in mV of pH
float pH = OpenGarden.pHConversion(mvpH); //Calculate pH value

//Read the conductivity sensor in µS/cm
float resistanceEC = OpenGarden.readResistanceEC(); //EC Value in resistance
float EC = OpenGarden.ECConversion(resistanceEC); //EC Value in µS/cm

Output

**************************
2/19/2016 FRI 12:20:45
Water Temperature: 85.00*C
Water Temperature: 85.00*C
***************************
2/19/2016 FRI 12:20:47
Water Temperature: 85.00*C
Water Temperature: 85.00*C
***************************
2/19/2016 FRI 12:20:50
Water Temperature: 85.00*C
Water Temperature: 85.00*C
***************************
2/19/2016 FRI 12:20:52
Water Temperature: 85.00*C

Without ec reading

//Read DS18B20
float waterTemperature = OpenGarden.readSoilTemperature();
Serial.print(F("Water Temperature: "));
Serial.print(waterTemperature);
Serial.println("*C");

//Read the pH sensor
int mvpH = OpenGarden.readpH(); //Value in mV of pH
float pH = OpenGarden.pHConversion(mvpH); //Calculate pH value

//Read the conductivity sensor in µS/cm
//float resistanceEC = OpenGarden.readResistanceEC(); //EC Value in resistance
//float EC = OpenGarden.ECConversion(resistanceEC); //EC Value in µS/cm

Water Temperature: 85.00*C
***************************
2/19/2016 FRI 12:14:51
Water Temperature: 85.00*C
Water Temperature: 9.13*C
***************************
2/19/2016 FRI 12:14:53
Water Temperature: 9.13*C
Water Temperature: 9.13*C
***************************
2/19/2016 FRI 12:14:55
Water Temperature: 9.13*C

Hello leemandell,

are you using the last version of Open Garden library? What Arduino IDE version are you using? Are you using Arduino Uno?

Please send us some photos of your hardware connections.

Regards.

Hi, Im using the arduino IDE v 1.6.5 and open garden library version 2.2

I don't see a way to upload images so I have to get them up on a public website to link to them. I tried swapping the leads for the EC connection as it says they are not signed but that did not help.

Hello leemandell,

please try downloading arduino IDE 1.0.5 version here:
https://www.arduino.cc/en/Main/OldSoftw ... ases#1.0.x

In order to upload photo you can use a public host like dropbox or imgur.com for example. Also please copy here your code.

Regards.

Hello leemandell,

please try with this new version of Open Garden library:

The new version of the open garden library worked.

FYI using the old version of the arduino IDE did not help.

Now I'm on to getting the wifi module working so that I can post data. Having problems that but will start another thread.

Thank you
