Hi,

I want to use a Squidbee Mote and a Squidbee Gateway on my university project. But I have a few questions about differences between Squidbee Motes and Gateways. Firstly, I want to take a briefly information about differences between motes and gateways.

I am planning to use a GPS module on Squidbee Mote for getting location of the mote. I am also planning to use a GSM/GPRS module on Squidbee Gateway for sending alarm SMS depending on the condition that taken from motes. Can I use GSM/GPRS module on gateway?

Additionaly, When I was looking over cooking hack website I have seen example codes for Suidbee motes but I didn't see any example code for Squidbee gateway. Are there any example code for Squidbee gateway? Could you please explain that How I can take data packets from motes on the gateway?

Thanks,
Murat

Hi myazar,

Squidbee mote is a arduino based mote, totally programmable.
For GPS, GPRS connection see these articles:
http://sensor-networks.org/index.php?page=0824024033
http://sensor-networks.org/index.php?page=0823923911
Squidbee gateway is not programmable, it has not the arduino microcontroller, so it's just a communication bridge between XBee (802.15.4) and PC (USB).

Thanks for quickly response.

According to your comments, I understand that can't use GSM/GPRS module on the gateway. I use gsm module only motes. Is it true?

If it is true, I have a question about usage of them. Can I use both GSM/GPRS and GPS modules on a mote?

Thanks,
Murat

Hi,

You can connect the GPS like here:

Just change the XBee shield for the GPRS shield.

Thanks for reply but I have read this document a lot of times. so it doesn't meet my question.

I just want to learn that Can I use GSM on the Squidbee Gateway (not Squidbee Mote). As I understood from your first reply, I can't use GSM on the gateway because gateway is not programmable. I want to be sure that before taking the gateway and mote.

Could you please send me clear answers as soon as possible? It is very important issue to proceed my project.

Thanks,
Murat

Hi myazar,

With the gateway you only can connect the XBee module to PC via USB, if you take out the XBee shield and connect the GPRS shield, you could connect the GPRS to PC via USB and communicate the PC to GPRS using AT commands.

Why don't use an Arduino and GPRS shield?
What exactly do you need about GPRS?

regards

In my project, I want to use the gateway for both transmit sensor data taken from sensor mote via xbee and send alarm sms via GSM module. The reason of I want to use GSM module on the gateway if I take a lot of sensor mote later, i want to send alarm sms from only a center . This center is the squidbee gateway. Alarm SMS will be send according to taken data from sensor motes.

But I understand from your comments, I can't apply this scenario on the Squidbee Gateway because there is no any microcontroller. Because I need to decision-making on the gateway to decide which cases to be sent alarm sms.

In this case I should use the GSM module only on the sensor motes. Is it true?

Thanks,

Hi,

You can use one of the motes with XBee and GPRs, so you recieve data from other motes via XBee, you can treat those data and send the alarms / data using GPRS.

Hi,

Thanks for your support about this issue. It will be very helpful.

I have ordered a squidbee mote and gateway with gps and gsm module.
But I have another question about gateway-PC connection. I want to connect to the gateway a device that shows sensor data on LCD. Can I add those device via twin usb cable to the gateway at the same time with PC? So Gateway will be connected a PC and a device same time.

Thanks,
Murat

Hi myazar,

No, you can't connect an LCD to the gateway, you can't control it. (no microcontroller).
