    The idea behind the Raspberry Pi to Arduino shields connection bridge is to allow to use any of the shields, boards and modules designed for Arduino in Raspberry Pi. It includes also the possibility of connecting digital and analog sensors, using the same pinout of Arduino but with the power and capabilities of Raspberry.

    In order to make complete the compatibility we have created the arduPi library which allows to use Raspberry with the same code used in Arduino. To do so, we have implemented conversion functions so that you can control in the same way as in Arduino all the I/O interfaces: i2C, SPI, UART, analog, digital, in Raspberry Pi.

    The Raspberry Pi to Arduino Shields Connection Bridge is compatible with both Raspberry Pi and the new Raspberry Pi (Model B+). Read more.

    The 4-20 mA Current Loop Board is one of the most robust sensor signaling standard. Current loops are ideal for data transmission because of their inherent insensitivity to electrical noise. In a 4-20 mA current loop, all the signaling current flows through all components; the same current flows even if the wire terminations are less than perfect. All the components in the loop drop voltage due to the signaling current flowing through them. The signaling current is not affected by these voltage drops as long as the power supply voltage is greater than the sum of the voltage drops around the loop at the maximum signaling current of 20 mA.

    Transmitting sensor information via a current loop is particularly useful when the information has to be sent to a remote location over long distances (500 meters, or more). The loop operation is straightforward: a sensor output voltage is first converted to a proportional current, with 4 mA normally representing the sensor zero-level output, and 20 mA representing the sensor full-scale output. Then, a receiver at the remote end converts the 4-20 mA current back into a voltage which in turn can be further processed by a computer or display module.

    CAN is a multi-master broadcast serial bus standard for connecting electronic control units (ECUs). Each node is able to send and receive messages, but not simultaneously. A message consists primarily of an ID (identifier), which represents the priority of the message. A CAN message that is transmitted with highest priority will succeed and the node transmitting the lower priority message will sense this and back off and wait.

    The information is transmitted by two twisted wires that connect all system modules. It is transmitted by voltage difference between the two levels. The high voltage value represents 1 and low 0. Its combination forms an appropriate message.

    RS-485 is the most versatile communication standard. The RS-485 standard defines the electrical characteristics of drivers and receivers for use in digital systems. The standard is published by the Telecommunications Industry Association/Electronic Industries Alliance (TIA/EIA). RS-485 signals are used in a wide range of computer and automation systems and are used in programmable logic controllers and on factory floors. Since it is differential, it resists electromagnetic interference from motors and welding equipment. It may be used to control video surveillance systems or to interconnect security control panels and devices such as access control card readers. It does not specify or recommend any communications protocol. In the next table the electrical characteristics of the standard are defined.

    The RS-485 module for Arduino and Raspberry allows users to perform industrial and domotic applications. The RS-485 is the most versatile communication standard in the standard. This a standard defining the electrical characteristics of drivers and receivers for use in digital systems. It does not specify or recommend any communications protocol. In the next table the electrical characteristics of the standart are defined.

    The RS-232 standard was first introduced in 1962 by the Radio Sector of the EIA. The original DTEs (data terminal equipment) were electromechanical teletypewriters, and the original DCEs (data circuit-terminating equipment) were usually modems. For many years, an RS-232-compatible port was a standard feature for serial communications, such as modem connections, on many computers. The RS-232 standard is still used to connect industrial equipment (such as PLCs), console ports and special purpose equipment.

    The IEEE RS-232 standard defines electrical, signal timing, and size connectors. Use of a common ground, limits RS-232 to applications with relatively short cables. Data signals between -3V and -15V represents a logic 1. The logic 0 is represented by a voltage of between +3V and +15V.

    The Arduino Ethernet is a microcontroller board based on the ATmega328 (datasheet). It has 14 digital input/output pins, 6 analog inputs, a 16 MHz crystal oscillator, a RJ45 connection, a power jack, an ICSP header, and a reset button. NB: Pins 10, 11, 12 and 13 are reserved for interfacing with the Ethernet module and should not be used otherwise. This reduces the number of available pins to 9, with 4 available as PWM outputs. It includes a Power over Ethernet module that can be added to the board as well. The Ethernet differs from other boards in that it does not have an onboard USB-to-serial driver chip, but has a Wiznet Ethernet interface. This is the same interface found on the Ethernet shield.     The new version of this shield allows for either 3.3 or 5v logic, a separate and more robust VIN connection, and the PWM input has moved to pin 3.

    This is a motor shield for Arduino that will control two DC motors. Based on the L298 H-bridge, the Ardumoto can drive up to 2 amps per channel. The board takes its power from the same Vin line as the Arduino board,  includes blue and yellow LEDs to indicate active direction, and all driver lines are diode protected from back EMF.

    Control for motor attached to OUT1/2 is connected to digital line 12 (direction A) and digital line 3 (PWM A).

    Control for motor attached to OUT3/4 is connected to digital line 13 (direction B) and digital line 11 (PWM B).

    Description: The Open Music Labs Codec Shield gives your Arduino (or Maple) development board access to the all of the audio processing power of the Wolfson WM8731 codec. The WM8731 is a low-power stereo audio codec with stereo 24-bit multi-bit sigma delta ADCs and DACs which are used with oversampling digital interpolation and decimation filters. Thanks to the variable sampling frequency of the codec, even the relatively slow Arduino can grab and alter audio in real-time.

    The Codec Shield breaks out all of the useful pins on the WM8731 including the mic, line-in and out, headphone, and midrail bias voltage pin. It also has 1/8" stereo input and headphone out jacks as well as a pair of potentiometers for modulating parameters in your code.

    The shield uses SPI to communicate with the WM8731 so it won't work directly with the Arduino Mega, but getting started on an Arduino-UNO style board or LeafLabs Maple is easy! Just download the library and example code, hook up and audio source and start tweaking.

    Obviously you don't have much time to execute code between audio samples, so your code will need to stay pretty slim, but the example code gives a great framework for how your code should flow. Open Music Labs claims a performance increase of 4x when running the shield on a Maple (thanks to the higher clock speed).

    Description: If you aren't familiar with the Electric Imp, it essentially provides an easy, integrated way to connect almost any hardware device both to other devices and to internet services. It's more than just a WiFi card, or even a WiFi module with processing built in - it's an integrated platform that deals with the drudgery of connectivity, allowing you to concentrate on the application instead of the mechanics. Of course, if you're developing for it you'll need a way to get in there and poke around. The Electric Imp Shield allows you to connect your Arduino project to the internet through your home WiFi network. This way, your Arduino can take advantage of the Imp Cloud service and connect to HTTP APIs.

    The Shield connects one of the imp's UARTs (Imp pins 5 and 7) to either the Arduino hardware UART or a software serial on pins 8 and 9. It defaults to the software serial, but there are jumpers on the bottom side to set it to the hardware serial. A couple imp pins (8 9) are also connected to LEDs. They can be disconnected via jumpers on the bottom, if you'd like.

    Because the Electric Imp can draw up to 400mA on the 3.3V line, this shield has its own voltage regulator which is fed from the 5V Arduino line. Most Arduino compatible boards should be able to handle this amount of draw but beware that some clones that use less robust VREGs could see trouble.

    You hear it all the time in the Arduino community, "will this shield work with my other shield?." I think we've all been disappointed to find that two of our favorite shields compete for control of a digital pin here or a serial pin there. While there are sometimes some clever workarounds from elegant code modifications to aggressive 'greenwiring,' Mayhew Labs may have come up with the simplest solution thus far: The Go-Between Shield.

    The Go-Between Shield "goes between" two shields that aren't compatible and effectively reassigns the pins. This trickery is achieved by isolating the top and bottom sides of the shield with surface mount headers and breaking them out into tables of jumpers that can be bridged to divert signals to and from different pins. For instance: If you have two shields that require use of pin A1, you can simply close the correct jumper and stack the Go-Between shield between the two conflicting shields. Now the shield above the Go-Between will think it's using A1 when in reality it's connected to the Arduino's A0. Now your shields aren't stepping on each others' feet, so to speak.

    The Go-Between Shield is also a solution to some shield compatibility problems with Arduino clones such as the Maple or Netduino.

    The DLINE/UART switch switches the GPS module's input/output between Arduino's standard TX/RX pins or any digital pins on the Arduino (default setting uses pins 3 and 2 connected to TX and RX, respectively). The DLINE/UART switch must be set to DLINE in order to upload code through the Arduino IDE.

    The shield also includes the footprint for a 12mm coin cell battery holder to provide battery backup to the optional EB-85A GPS module.An ON/OFF switch is included which controls power to the GPS module. Additionally, the Arduino reset switch is also brought out.

    Description: Is there anything an Arduino can't do? Well, for one, most of them can't be powered directly from a 3.7V LiPo battery; much less charge and monitor that battery. The LiPower Shield takes care of this by combining the functionality of two of our favorite battery power boards: the Power Cell and the Fuel Gauge.

    The LiPower Shield allows you to connect a 3.7V single cell Lithium polymer battery which it will boost up to 5V and connect to the Arduino board's 5V pin. The on-board MAX17043G+U IC is connected to the I2C lines (A4 and A5) so that your project can monitor it's own power supply. The configurable alert interrupt pin on the MAX17043G+U IC is broken out to D3 which will activate when the LiPo gets to 32% or lower.

    The charging circuit is configured to charge the LiPo at 100mA but by adding a resistor to the supplied through-holes you can boost this to 500mA. There is a mini-USB port on the shield which allows you to charge the battery from a USB power source or you can supply a separate regulated 5V source on the "charge" header.

    Note: We've decided to leave the power indicator LED (LED1) and its current limiting resistor (R3) off this board, as they were producing a significant drain on the battery. Please be aware that your board will have a few, shiny, unpopulated pads.

    Note: There is a known hardware bug that will allow the LiPo to discharge below the point where the charging circuit will revive it. Thanks to the on-board fuel gauge, however, some clever programming could keep your project from draining the battery as it gets too low.

    Description: Sometimes you've got way too many inputs, or outputs... or both. How are you going to get them all connected to your Arduino? The Mux Shield, that's how. The Mux Shield II from Mayhew Labs is an upgrade on their previous Mux Shield which makes it possible to route up to 48 analog and digital inputs or digital outputs to and from your Arduino board.

    The Mux Shield II improves on the original by moving all of the I/O pins to the end of the board, thus allowing you to add one big connector and hook up a ribbon wire or similar cable solution. This also gets the pins out of the way so that the Mux Shield can be in the middle of a stack, with a shield on top of it, and you can still get to the I/O pins. The pins are arranged into three rows of sixteen and each row can be individually set as a digital input, a digital output or an analog input from the Arduino sketch! Further increasing the flexibility of the board, Mayhew Labs added solder jumpers to the bottom of the board that allow you to shut off this software control feature and "hard wire" the functionality of each row, freeing up the associated Arduino pins for other shields in the stack.

    The Mux Shield uses TI 74HC4067 analog multiplexers (muxs) for input functionality and TI 74HC595 shift registers for output functionality. Don't worry if that's jibberish to you, the included Arduino library wraps it up and makes it very easy-to-use.

    The shield comes without any headers so be sure to pick up some stackable shield headers!

    Description: Ethernet connectivity is a great way to get your Arduino talking to other systems all over the world (or at least the network). But sometimes running an Ethernet cable is hard enough, why should you have to run a power cable too? That's where PoE comes into play: Power over Ethernet. The PoEthernet Shield not only give your Arduino access to the Internet via the Ethernet Library but it also allows your project to power itself from the Ethernet line (provided you've injected power to it somewhere down the line).

    The way this is accomplished is that the unused data pairs of the RJ-45 connector broken out to the 4-pin header in the corner of the shield. The 'V-' pin on that header breaks out the 7 8 pair of RJ-45 pins, and the 'V+' pin breaks out the 4 5 pair. You can use a couple of jumpers to connect those pins to 'GND' and 'VIN' respectively. This will send the PoE through the Arduino, to be regulated to 5 and 3.3V. This works really well with our passive PoE cable set! The shield also includes an SD card slot that can be accessed using the SD library.

    Note: This is not 802.3af-compatible PoE, it's more of a home-brew Power-over-Ethernet scheme that we like to call "DIY PoE." You shouldn't apply anything outside the 7-12V range to those pins (The input voltage range of the Arduino board) unless you regulate the power off-board.

Finally, the 2.2k resistor on the Iref pin sets the output current to 17.8mA but a parallel through-hole connection is provided for an additional resistor to increase the current if necessary.     Ethernet connectivity is a great way to get your Arduino talking to other systems all over the world (or at least the network). But sometimes running an Ethernet cable is hard enough, why should you have to run a power cable too? That's where PoE comes into play: Power over Ethernet. The PoEthernet Shield not only give your Arduino access to the Internet via the Ethernet Library but it also allows your project to power itself from the Ethernet line (provided you've injected power to it somewhere down the line).

    The way this is accomplished is that the unused data pairs of the RJ-45 connector broken out to the 4-pin header in the corner of the shield. The 'V-' pin on that header breaks out the 7 8 pair of RJ-45 pins, and the 'V+' pin breaks out the 4 5 pair. You can use a couple of jumpers to connect those pins to 'GND' and 'VIN' respectively. This will send the PoE through the Arduino, to be regulated to 5 and 3.3V. This works really well with our passive PoE cable set! The shield also includes an SD card slot that can be accessed using the SD library.

    Note: This is not 802.3af-compatible PoE, it's more of a home-brew Power-over-Ethernet scheme that we like to call "DIY PoE." You shouldn't apply anything outside the 7-12V range to those pins (The input voltage range of the Arduino board) unless you regulate the power off-board.

    Fear not, the TransmogriShield will transform your beloved classic shields into Leonardo-compatible shields (apparently "in a surprising or magical manner"? Really? Transmogrify?) By using an arrangement of surface-mount headers to "intercept" the incoming pins and shift them around, the TransmogriShield takes the SPI and I2C lines from their new, less convenient, homes at the ICSP header and D2/3 pins, and moves them back into classic Arduino position: SPI on D11-13 and I2C on A4/A5. Any shield placed above the TransmogriShield in the stack will "see" those lines in their old positions. If you can't work around the weird wiring in firmware, this shield might be a good quick-fix.

    Along with allowing you to use classic SPI/I2C based shields like the RF22 Shield, the Touch Shield or the SD Shield, the TransmogriShield also provides plenty of prototyping space, so it makes a pretty good protoshield for the Leonardo!
